Sibley And The Santa Fe Trail

The Santa Fe Trail marker, placed in the southeast corner of the Sibley Cemetery by the D.A.R in 1909.

In 1909, the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a monument to the Santa Fe Trail on the southeast edge of the Sibley Cemetery. The Fort Osage area played a minor role in the Santa Fe Trail. In the final years of Fort Osage some of the Trail’s travelers would come to the Fort to meet boats on the Missouri River. In 1825, George Sibley who had been the Factor at Fort Osage , was selected by the United States Government to map the Trail. In 1880 the railroad reached Santa Fe and the trail faded into history.
