Clemson’s Company
These are the soldiers from Clemson’s Company of the 1st US Infantry (Stationed at Fort Osage from September of 1808 until June of 1813) that are buried in the Cemetery.
Private John King – 5’7″, black hair, dark complexion, hazel eyes.
Born in Rhode Island in 1781. Shoemaker by trade. He enlisted in Philadelphia on April 7, 1807, aged 26 years. Died aboard a keel boat bound for Fort Osage. Buried November 15, 1810. Cause of death listed as a liver ailment.
Private James Porter – 5’8″, brown hair, dark complexion, hazel eyes.
Born in Massachusetts in 1774. Laborer by trade. Enlisted at Lancaster, PA on February 9, 1807, aged 33 years. Died Wednesday, September 18, 1811. Buried September 19, 1811. Cause of death listed as infirmity and Fever.
Private Clement Bonsell – 5’8″, brown hair, dark complexion, hazel eyes.
Born in Pennsylvania in 1780. Farmer by trade. Enlisted January 17, 1807, aged 27 years. Reenlisted September 30, 1811. Died December 24th, 1811 of an apoplectic fit.
Corporal John Smith – 6’1″
Born in Delaware County Pennsylvania. Enlisted in 1807. Tried on May 30, 1808 for drunkenness and neglect of duty when on command, reduced to private. Promoted to Corporal again on October 1, 1811. Reenlisted on October 2, 1811. Shot and killed on September 7, 1812 while carrying dispatches from Fort Osage to Fort Belle Fontaine (St. Louis). Probably killed by Sauk and Fox Indians who were at war with the United States.
Sixth United States Infantry & The US Rifle Regiment
Due to the outbrake of scurvy over the winter of 1819/20 at Fort Atkinson, near what is now Omaha Nebraska, men from these units were sent down river to Fort Osage to recuperate.
