Fort Osage Staff Member Awarded the Jackson County Associate of the Month: March 2018

Jackson County, Missouri honored Laura King, a Museum Interpreter at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark as the March 2018 Associate of the Month. Laura was the last staff member on duty on the evening of February 18th, when she noticed smoke on the bluff below the Fort. Laura alerted the Fire Department and Jackson County Parks Officials of the fire, and her actions saved the reconstructed fort. Laura has been with the Historic Sites division of Jackson County Parks + Rec for forty-two years. Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. and Jackson County Parks + Rec Director Michele Newman presented the award to Laura earlier this past week.

Fort Osage National Historic Landmark received damage from a grass fire in February 2018.

Fort Osage National Historic Landmark sustained damage in a grass fire on the evening of February 18, 2018. Firefighters say strong winds and dry weather conditions caused the fire to spread to the historic landmark. Fire crews from multiple agencies, including Fort Osage Fire Protection District, Independence, Sni Valley, Central Jackson County, Liberty, and Wellington-Napoleon, responded to the scene around 5 p.m. Sunday, February 18, 2018.

Located on the banks of the scenic Missouri River in Sibley, MO, the historic site has been reconstructed to portray Fort Osage as it was in 1812. Authentically-attired interpreters provide living history insights into the daily life of both the military and civilian populations. Fort Osage National Historic Landmark is owned and operated by Jackson County Parks + Rec.
