Here is an article from the Deseret News on the Liberty Jail and it’s connection to the Mormons. In 1838 the state of Missouri was in the process of trying to remove the Mormons from the State. The leader of the Mormon Church Joseph Smith, was arrested and placed in the jail.
The Mormon Church relocated to Utah soon after Joseph Smith got out of jail.

The Liberty Jail museum is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The museum is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. daily.
