Independence Day 2013 at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark.

Independence Day, July 4th, was the most popular holiday of the 19th Century. Americans ignored political and sectional differences and united to commemorate the founding of their nation.
Within three years of the signing of the declaration, the United States military outlined the procedures for American troops to commemorate the day. In addition to a set ceremony, the day became a holiday from work and included festivities marked by “…laughter, games, speeches, food and drink.”

However, the celebration of Independence Day in 1812 for Fort Osage had additional significance. There were “huzzahs” and toasts to the new Territory of Missouri, and its 20,000 citizens. And on this particular July 4th patriotism ran especially high. Thirty some years after fighting a war of independence against England, America was once again embroiled in a power struggle with her old enemy.
