Missouri’s Small Slaveholding Households By: Dr. Diane Mutti-Burke

Join author Dr. Diane Mutti-Burke in a discussion on early slavery in Missouri based upon her books, On Slavery’s Border: Missouri’s Small Slaveholding Households, 1815-1865 and Bleeding Kansas, Bleeding Missouri: The Long Civil War on the Border (co-authored with Jonathan Earle). Learn about the impact that slavery had on smaller households through a journey of both geography and scale. Book signing and optional historical building tour available afterward. The City of Independence Tourism Department will also debut its brochure, “African-American Historic Sites in Independence, Missouri,” highlighting sites connected to the history of the African-American community of Independence, Missouri.
