This week Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri will be celebrating its Centennial. Union Station first opened on October 30, 1914. Union Station made national headlines on June 17, 1933, when four unarmed FBI agents were gunned down by members of a gang trying to free Frank Nash. This became known as the “Kansas City Massacre” and this resulted in the FBI arming all agents. By 1973, Union Station had only six passenger trains a day passing through and the station quickly deteriorated.
In 1996 five counties in both Kansas and Missouri approved 1/8 cent sales tax to renovate Union Station. Today Union Station houses an Amtrak station, a large interactive science museum, rail exhibit, Irish museum, five-story Regnier Extreme Screen theater and Gottlieb Planetarium, the Block theater, as well as restaurants, shops and event spaces.
